Why turn-based RPGs still rule on phones
Action combat looks great in trailers, but on a crowded train with one hand free, turn-based is king. You can pause, think, and never lose a fight because someone bumped your elbow.
Ashveil Chronicle reminded me of this. Its combat gives you time to read the enemy and plan, which suits the stop-start nature of phone play. You can put it down mid-battle and pick up exactly where you were.
The genre's weakness is pacing. A lot of mobile RPGs pad early chapters with grind to stretch playtime. My rule: judge an RPG by its mid-game, not its first hour.
If you're new to the genre, start on the normal difficulty and actually read your skill descriptions. Half of winning turn-based fights is just knowing what your own party does.
